Examples of Family Law Matters

Our law firm assists clients with all types of family law issues, including:

  • Divorce/dissolution of marriage
  • Child custody
  • Child support
  • Alimony/spousal maintenance
  • Paternity
  • Visitation/parenting time
  • Adoption
  • Grandparent visitation
  • Separation agreements
  • Property division/equitable distribution
  • Modifications
  • Domestic violence/restraining orders

Equitable Distribution of Property

Colorado is a "no-fault" divorce state, which means that neither spouse has to provide any specific grounds for the divorce. This also means that neither spouse is punished for causing the divorce when it comes to dividing the marital property.

Colorado provides for the "equitable distribution" of property amongst the spouses. This does not necessarily mean an "equal" division and does not eliminate the need for both parties to supply a complete picture of their finances. It will be up to the court to decide what is "equitable" so having an attorney that can help you make persuasive arguments is a must. Our firm is particularly adept at documenting all assets and debts and helping to divide complex assets such as retirement accounts, pensions, business interests, and stocks or stock options.

Obtaining Modifications

Our attorneys handle all types of post-decree modifications. These issues often involve removal of children because the custodial parent remarries or obtains a new job out of state. A modification may be needed if one party becomes an unfit parent because of drug use or other criminal behavior, if one parent has a sudden change in income, or any other occurrence that makes existing orders or agreements unworkable or impractical.
